Cascades Best 2025 Winner
Best Sports Bar

The Score Sports Bar & Grill opened in summer 2024, owned and operated by Ferndale’s very own Sara Fassett and Jono Anderson! Located just north of Bellingham, in the heart of downtown Ferndale.

With several years of experience in the bar and restaurant industry – and even more experience as Seattle sports nerds (Go Hawks!) – Sara and Jono have always dreamed of opening up a sports bar in Downtown Ferndale. In 2023, they got a space in the middle of Main Street, and started turning the dream into a reality.

With a renovated space, a brand new kitchen and bar, big-screen TVs, an incredible staff, and more sports memorabilia and decor than we can possibly list here, The Score is proud to be Whatcom County’s best environment to watch the game! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated on on what we’re up to; as well as info on specials, deals, giveaways, merch, and other exciting news.

Sara and Jono are pretty much the exact OPPOSITE of hands-off ownership; when you visit The Score, you’ll see all the hard work and care that went into every bit of the bar and restaurant. And they’ll probably be right here in the bar to have a beer and cheer on the Hawks with all of Ferndale!

Sara Fassett
Co-Owner

Sara Fassett is a longtime sports fan – and came up with the idea for her own sports bar about 10 years ago! She was managing the Slo Pitch at the time, and loved the atmosphere and communal celebration when our teams win – and wanted to bring her own vision to life. 2 years ago, Sara and her husband, Jono Anderson, met the owners of the building that The Score is now in… and they both decided to take the leap!

Sara and Jono have both worked in the bar/restaurant industry since they were teenagers, and have been self-proclaimed sports nerds for years, so they absolutely love being in the sports bar world! They have both tried out other professions, but their hearts kept drawing them back to the sports bar world.

Sara’s initial concept for The Score was to bring something different to Downtown Ferndale.  Sara and Jono know so many people here in Ferndale… but those folks often head to Bellingham for meals and fun.  There was a need for a nice place with excellent food and drinks right here in town.  An “elevated sports bar” was the concept.

Their missing piece was food – which needed to be different than what could currently be found.  They were fortunate to meet James Pitzer – and The Score’s final puzzle piece was in place. James took the “elevated sports bar” concept and absolutely knocked it out of the park with the menu he created.

The idea seems to be working, as Sara and Jono have absolutely loved seeing our old friends – and new ones! – coming back again and again.  What a joy to give people a place where they can expect incredible food, drinks, atmosphere… and to see their friends as well!

Jono Anderson
Co-Owner

Born and raised in Whatcom County, Jono Anderson moved to Ferndale about ten years ago and has loved it ever since.

A lifelong sports fan with nearly twenty years in the bar and restaurant industry, odds are Jono has been your bartender or server somewhere before. His resume reads like a list of your favorite bars and casual dining spots in the county.

Starting at the Anderson family’s B&B Tavern, then Syros Greek and Italian Restaurant, The Nuthouse Grill, Applebee’s, New York Pizza, Nicki’s Bella Marina, and The Slo Pitch… with a few others sprinkled in along the way.

Jono met the love of his life, Sara Fassett, at the Slo Pitch. Together for more than ten years, the couple were married in 2022. Their blended family is now grown: Taylor Fassett is 22, Julia Parcels is 23, and Jordyn Evanger is 24.

Sara and Jono look forward to focusing our time and energy and considerable skills and experience back into the industry we both love so much – and are very excited to be a big part of the Ferndale community that we love for years to come!

James Pitzer
Chef de Cuisine

After having his eyes opened to the beauty and importance of food as a teenager in Monistrol-Sur-Loire, France, James Pitzer returned to his hometown of San Marcos, Texas. There, he attended Texas State University and began working in restaurants in both the front and back of the house.

After a few years he moved to Austin to attend the Texas Culinary Academy and intern at the Omni Austin hotel. Over the next few decades, James worked through kitchens in Austin and Dallas honing his skills and learning from mentors such as Marc Cassel at The Green Room in Dallas’ Deep Ellum arts district.

In 2005, he packed his knives and moved to the beautiful city of Ferndale where he started a multi award winning food trailer business. StrEAT Food set the standard for what would become the Whatcom County food truck scene for 11 years, but all things must pass… So now, James is proudly bringing his cooking style and love for his community together at The Score.
